On Saturday I attended Curlfest. Curlfest took place in Brooklyn, NY at Prospect Park. Boy did they come out by the thousands. I heard that it was 30K plus attendees! It’s safe to say that Curlfest 2018 was the largest hair festival. The event was created by Curly Girl Collective founders Tracey Coleman, Melody Henderson, Charisse Higgins, Gia Lowe, and Simone Mair. Now into year five, I am proud to say that I’ve attended every year. This last one was my third year working with EDEN BodyWorks. From watching the inception of it till now, these five ladies make sure that every year is greater than the previous – they definitely exceeded that. If you’re planning to attend Curlfest, I’ve compiled a list to have you ready for next year.

Arrive Early

If it starts at noon, allow yourself AT LEAST two hours before to park (if you decide to drive, although I do not recommend it) and walk to the location of where Curlfest is. The lines for tickets holders grew very quickly; no matter which tier you purchased. When I arrived at 9am people already started to form a line, and some people were on the lawn in the best shade they felt possible. Plus we all know that besides coming for the experience, your favorite brands are there. Write a list before you arrive so that you can knock as many as possible, and go to your #1 booth FIRST.

Establish a Meet up Spot

Unfortunately, it seems as if all cellular towers are down during Curlfest – even if you have HotSpot. There are so many people there, the lines cross and there is little to no service like calling someone at midnight on New Year’s Day! The service is that serious y’all! If you’re planning to meet anyone, it’s best to have a meeting spot. Whether it’s by the step and repeat, or a booth, set a time and stay put! No seriously. Or else you’ll miss people you wanted to hang out with that day.

Bring Cash

Most vendors have devices to take cards for transactions. But due to the lack of wireless service, bringing cash to purchase is the easiest. It is also the safest, because most of your favorite vendors have the best deals ever. I’m sure you do not want to miss out on this opportunity.

Dress to Impress

Curlfest is THE hair festival to be at right? So if your hair is amazing, you know your ‘fit has to match the part also! Because Essence, BET, and various magazines and news channels are there, you want make sure you look chic and fab! You never know, you may be asked to take a picture and see yourself somewhere big!

So guys, there you have it! Hopefully this will help you first timers, or ones that came on Saturday that did not feel prepared. If you’re a Curlfest Vet, comment below and let me know some ways you prepared.
